Pleated Lampshades

Wednesday, May 8, 2013

First of all, I want to congratulate you for clicking through to read this post.  You're a design geek of the highest level.

I firmly believe that it's the details that take a space from "pretty good" to extraordinary, so I tend to scrutinize rooms that I admire and make mental notes of all of the details.  One of the details on my radar right now is the use of pleated lampshades.

Pleated lampshades were big in the 80's and 90's, but fell out of favor for the more streamlined drum shade.  Apparently someone smarter than me thought that if brass could make a big comeback, why not bring back  pleated lampshades too.

I think this is just part of a larger movement to more classic interiors, where the pretty details are layered on.

Easy Update with Target Cylinder Lamp Shade

Monday, August 27, 2012

It's no secret that I can't refuse a great vintage lamp.  Here's one of my latest lamp purchases.  I don't think it's old or particularly valuable, but I loved the squatty jar shape and the riot of colors in the Chinoiserie design.
I was not loving the lavender shade that came with it.  The proportion wasn't quite right and the whole shade was looking a little tired.

I found the perfect solution on the clearance aisle at Target.  These black cylinder shades were marked down to just $7.

It's makes that little old lamp look important, doesn't it?

Project Dollhouse Master Bedroom is Done (ish) - Instagram Tour

Sunday, July 29, 2012

So you probably thought this day would never come (and even though there are still some projects left to do), I think my master bedroom is finished enough for an Instagram tour.

First, the obligatory "befores".  This is about a year ago, when we first bought Project Dollhouse.  I was not digging those Jif walls.   And the 1972 architectural details are underwhelming, mainly because there are none.

You might remember this post, where I drew inspiration for my/our master bedroom from this tea tin.  I loved the jade color combined with pinks and reds and, of course,  the Chinoiserie style.

Here is the inspiration board, which is centered around the screen, which is now my headboard:

And here is my bedroom:

The screen was a super-lucky find.  I blogged about making over the nightstands here and about the Pagoda lampshades here.  The gold bench at the end of my bed is really a pair of Mid-Century tables that were sprayed gold (they sat in my booth forever- apparently no one in Chattanooga thought they were as cool as I did).  Anyway, I just butted them together for a makeshift bench - eventually I'll get a white fur cushion made.

Do you remember this lamp love story? Apparently it was meant to be.  We're still together : )

Same campaign dresser, 2 different looks.  When Katie came over to take photos, we played around with the styling.

And in the spirit of full disclosure, normally I have a tv on top of this dresser. It got zhushed up for its photo shoot.

So, for those of you who were here from the start of this project, thanks for hanging in there!  And if you're new to my blog, thanks for stopping by!

By the way, aren't these reveals nerve-wracking?  I feel like I just walked out of the dressing room with a bathing suit on.

Fun with Vintage Wallpaper - Etsy Shop Fondue

Friday, March 16, 2012

Is it already Friday?  This week has flown by but I wanted to share a new Etsy shop with you. Fondue is full of handcrafted items that turn mundane things like light switches, tissue box covers and lampshades into works of art using vintage wallpaper.  Here's a sample of the goods:

Aren't these lampshades a fun way to brighten up a lackluster corner?

Fondue also has a big selection of switchplate covers.

And tissue box covers, all made from vintage wallpaper.

All images from Fondue on Etsy.
Have a wonderful, safe weekend!

A special shade for Lampzilla

Sunday, November 6, 2011

So recently I blogged here about the trend for using oversize lamps.  And, if you recall, I showed you a few of my own oversized lamps.  The biggest of the bunch is this guy I like to call Lampzilla.  He's big and gold and certainly no shrinking violet.

You really don't get a sense of the scale of this thing - trust me, it's huge.

Anyway, just any old lamp shade won't fit a lamp of this size.  Luckily I had purchased a few big shades months ago and as luck would have it, this shade was a perfect fit.

Okay, so it fits, but somehow this shade just isn't, well, enough for Lampzilla. Not only is it crooked, it just doesn't  have enough pizazz to do Lampzilla justice.

Enter this big old ugly shade I've had hanging around for ages.

and, as is true in so many cases, it's paint to the rescue!

Next I broke out the glue gun and added some super special manly ribbon and now Lampzilla has a shade that is tall dark and handsome, just like he is!

Gosh I just love a happy ending!
