Chic Buffet Lamps

Sunday, April 26, 2015

Chic buffet lamps.  An oxymoron?  I used to think so, because when I think buffet lamps what comes to mind first are those boxed pair of nondescript stick lamps. Where's the fun in that?

Lamps, and lighting in general, are so important for setting the tone in a space.  I'm a lighting fanatic and it saddens me to see how often lighting is overlooked.

Buffet lamps have their very own purpose in life.  They are designed to illuminate that delicious spread you've laid out without taking up too much valuable space. They also look great on console tables in your entry or a desk, or anywhere else you've placed a narrow piece of furniture. Traditionally buffet lamps are tall with narrow shades, but why limit yourself to someone else's definition of what a buffet lamp should be?

                                                                    Lotus Leaf Lamp
If you know me at all then you know I love this lamp.  It's gold, it's nature inspired, and the lotus leaves give it a Chinoiserie flair. These lamps would be perfect on a lacquered piece.

Restoration Hardware's Pyramid Telescoping Lamp is great looking, modern and masculine.

Regina Andrew's Concrete and Brass Table Lamp is a favorite. The mix of brass and concrete is unexpected, and it would be perfect in a modern/rustic setting.

The Arteriors Sidney Lamp is a modern take on a classic marble lamp.  This lamp will stand the test of time.

This is the Doug Buffet Lamp by Chattanooga-based Stray Dog Designs.  It's whimsical, nature-inspired, and a great way to relax your "formal" dining room.

Upper Kitchen Cabinets - Level or Varied Height

Sunday, April 12, 2015

Hello!  My name is Kim and I still blog here - just not as frequently as I used to.

I have a question for you.  Do you like the look of upper kitchen cabinets at varying heights, or do you like them placed all on the same level?

It turns out I didn't really have an opinion on this until I was randomly perusing Pinterest for some kitchen inspiration. And then I began to take notice.

Obviously the kitchen above is in a transitional state but I find the varying heights of the upper cabinets a little unsettling.

This one doesn't seem quite as busy, perhaps because the wall and cabinet colors are so similar.

This is an adorable little  kitchen, but I can't help but think I'd love it a little more if all of the upper cabinets were placed on the same level. Also, I didn't realize that I disliked those angled corner cabinets until this whole thing came about.

Whew!  This is so much better (to me).  I love the uniformity and how the trim above the cabinets ties into the crown molding.  This is a great way to make your cabinets (and your entire kitchen) look more expensive.

PS   The lighting!

Funny how I didn't even know this was a thing until I started looking.

I realize this is just a matter of opinion, and there is really no wrong or right, but I'd love to know where you stand on the placement of upper kitchen cabinets.

Thanks for visiting today!  Remember, when I'm not on the blog I'm posting away on Instagram.  You can also follow me on Facebook and Pinterest!

Statement Staircases

Monday, August 25, 2014

Today I  put together a post for you that is small on words but big on pictures - all of them featuring beautiful staircases.
Interior design by Steven Gambrel

The catalyst for this post came up on my Instagram feed courtesy of this gorgeous staircase by C Brandon Ingram, an architect out of Atlanta.

I absolutely love the way he used such ordinary materials in a unexpected way.  It feels classic but fresh, which seems to be a recurring theme in his work.

Image from Pinterest - original source unknown
This appears to be an older home, but can you imagine how surprised you would be to walk in and see that bold coral pink runner?  This really works for me.

I think the staircase above is so crisp.  I t has a perfect mix of modern and classic design elements.

And I don't think it would be possible to post about statement staircases without including these beauties (above and below) by Kelly Wearstler

Here's another brass staircase from Greg Natale below

This staircase by Suzanne Kasler has been at the top of my list of favorite staircases for years.

as well as this stunner from Melissa Rufty -  which is really about what she did with the space rather than the staircase itself.

Ebay Fabric Obsessions

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

Is anyone else sick of all the playoff/bowl games that have been on TV over the past few weeks? I honestly don't mind watching the occasional football game with teams that I actually know and care about, but to watch game after game (after game) is not my idea of a good time.  So whilst the husband was alternately cheering and cursing at the TV, I made good use of my time by doing a little cyber fabric stalking, ebay style.  Have you tumbled down this rabbit hole yet? If you haven't,  you're missing out on some good stuff.

Like Brunschwig &Fils "Kyoto"  Completely lovely, super affordable, and there's enough to make a few pillows.

Or "Chinese Peony" from JP& G Baker, priced at just under $30 per yard. It's a polished cotton chintz in a gorgeous mint green.

Are you on the blue & white bandwagon? Here's a fabulous print you won't see all over town.

I love this one.  Don't judge.

Or what about Cowtan & Tout's Bloomsbury. Ultra-feminine and old school, but everything in moderation right?

Trust me, this is only the beginning.  And while we're on the subject of shopping, guess who's going to Scott's Antique Market??  Super excited!!!  I haven't been to Scott's in about 4 years so I'm really looking forward to the entire experience.  It's always so fun!  Look for lots of pictures on my Instagram feed.

Happy shopping everyone!

Blue & White Monday - The Exterior Files

Monday, September 30, 2013

I'm very excited to participate in The Pink Pagoda's first Blue & White Monday link-up event.  Do you find that Jennifer's Blue & White Monday series actually makes you look forward to Monday?  Me too.

I thought it might be fun to share some inspiring images of blue& white exteriors.  Have you ever thought of this never-fail color scheme for the outside of your home?

This image is for Jennifer, because we know how much she loves blue and white with some pink mixed in.

Note to self:  plan a trip to Greece sometime soon.

Greece again.  That saturated cobalt blue is amazing in the intense Grecian sunlight.

How about some blue & white on good old American architecture.

Clever how the blue & white planters echo the color palette of the house.

And finally, this one, for those that lean toward softer colors.

What do you think?  Are you a fan of blue & white on the exterior or do your prefer your blue & white indoors?

Visit "The Blue & White Bash" at The Pink Pagoda for even more blue & white inspiration!

Regarding Pinterest

Monday, March 18, 2013

So about Pinterest.  I was later than a lot of you to open an account, and even later to actually create my boards and start pinning.  Between blogging, facebook, work, family and everything else, I just didn't want to commit to another social networking platform.  I'm so glad I had a change of heart, because, good Lord,  I'm in awe over the number of fantastic images, ideas and recipes I'll never make to be pinned every day!

Do you have the Pinterest app? It's the end of boredom as we know it. Carpool lines, waiting rooms, and sporting events will never be the same.

I'm fascinated by what the people I'm following are pinning, and I'm astounded by the number of incredible design images that are floating around out there.  A wealth of inspiration for the taking!

And just a few weeks ago, someone I admire/idolize became a follower.

Meg Braff. Color me tickled.

Are any of your idols your followers?

Make sure you stop by Wednesday.  I'll be revealing my family room makeover for the One Room Challenge!

New at My Booth

Sunday, September 16, 2012

I haven't posted about any of the items I have for sale in my booth for a while, so it's high time I show you one of my favorite pieces! This pretty cottage style bed is an estate sale find and is over at my space at Merchants on Main.

I'm not sure how old it is but it's a full size bed and comes complete with all the rails, which is sometimes hard to find with antique beds. The bed is creamy white with gold details, and is still wearing it's original paint.  The gold details give it a sophisticated feel, and I think this bed could be the centerpiece of a beautiful Swedish country bedroom.

Swedish country rooms are typically clean, light and simple. There are no busy patterns, and nothing edgy or pretentious. Think soft colors and checks or stripes.

To get the ball rolling, I've done a little shopping for you to help you create your own Swedish Country bedroom. All you have to do is buy my bed and add these readily available companions!

I've also added some photos of other new items (some great stuff!!!) I have in  my booth over on  my Facebook page.  If you stop by for a look, be sure and like us!

Happy Monday, kids!

Wallpaper Resource

Monday, June 11, 2012

I'm not even sure how I got there, but a few weeks ago I came across Sidney Harbour Paints and got completely lost in their wallpaper selections. Sydney Harbour Paint Company is based in Australia, but I gather from their website that they have a location in California, too. Most of the papers I saw were nature-themed  with a modern attitude.  All were gorgeous and I wanted to use each and every one of them!

This fresh floral is called "Spring" and it's from Bowie Wong's collection,.

The charming "Round and Round the Garden" is from Anna Spiro's collection.  I'd love to see this in a kitchen.

Of all of the designers collections, my favorite was by Catherine Martin.  Most of her patterns featured birds in a very bold and modern way. The pattern below is called "Pheasant" , and it's shown here in Chocolate.

Also from Catherine Martin's collection is "Lyre Bird".

And Catherine Martin's "Cockatoo"

Here is"Dandelion". The scale of the print and the neutral tones make this botanical print feel current.

"Passion Flower" in pink

Ducks have come a long way since the 80's. This is "Marjorie Duck" by Bholu,
All images above from Sydney Harbour Paint Company.

Olioboard

Sunday, November 28, 2010

Have you been to Olioboard yet?  It's a site that's very similar to Polyvore, an online resource for creating inspiration boards. The advantage of Olioboard is that it's much easier for me  those who are not so technologically advanced!  Olioboard is exclusively devoted to creating interior design moodboards, and there are tons of options to choose from for furniture, accessories, lighting, rugs and even art!  It's completely free and you can click on any element on your board and get a link on where to purchase it.

My first time on Olioboard I created this board in about 20 minutes.

It's especially helpful for those who have a hard time envisioning the "finished product".

Be warned - its lots of fun and just might be addicting!

Have you discovered Olioboard yet?
