ORC Linking Event - I'm Doing My Hall Bath

Thursday, October 2, 2014

It's time to clear the cobwebs off of the ol' blog and start cranking out some serious decorating posts.  As you may have guessed, I've decided to join in on the internet's biggest decorating sensation - The One Room Challenge.

I'm participating in the Link-up event which airs for the next 5 consecutive Thursdays, so for goodness sake please come back to check in on my progress!  I need your feedback and encouragement! Mostly because of this ridiculousness:

Enter aforementioned hall bath in its current state.

As you can see it's crying out for help.  In a big way. Those walls.  They look like this because a few weeks ago I spent hours stripping off the top layer of wallpaper only to find ANOTHER layer of old wallpaper combined with unsized skim coated sheet rock in other areas.  Holy. Wallpaper. Hell.

This is what happened where the wallpaper was applied to a skim coat of bare sheet rock mud.

It totally damaged the sheet rock underneath.  I know what you're thinking.  "Thank goodness you have that pretty mirror".  True, but a lot of hard work needs to happen before we can revel in the goodness of the mirror.

And rather than do up an inspiration board, I'm going to drag you down this road with me one post at a time because some decisions have yet to be made.

Before you go, let's have a look at some bathrooms that are inspiring my little makeover shall we??

Yes, there will be wallpaper in the damask category. And it's super gorgeous because that's what Brunschwig & Fils does.   I gave you a sneak peek here.

And no ORC makeover of mine would be complete without repurpose-ing a piece or two of vintage furniture.

This is so gorgeous it takes my breath away. And it makes me wish I had been born with the "understated" gene.  But let's not kid ourselves.  We're more likely to see something with more color, pattern and layers.

and I'm okay with that.

So, same time next Thursday???

You can find links to all of the other participants on Linda's  (our hostess and mistress of ceremonies) blog here.  And in case you missed the ORC participants that posted yesterday, find those links here.  Hours of entertainment.  Literally.

PS.  I'll likely be posting little updates on my Instagram feed so let's buddy up.

My French Bouilette Lamp

Sunday, May 18, 2014

Happy Monday lovely readers!  Before we get into today's post,  I'd like to thank everyone for all of the positive comments and feedback on my reveal for the most recent One Room Challenge.  You guys make my day! I still plan to add and finish a few things in those rooms so I'll update you with progress reports as they happen.

And speaking of updates, I've already changed out something in my living room.  I found a new lamp while shopping in Atlanta over Mother's Day weekend.  Actually my Mom spotted the lamp and kindly offered it up for me to purchase. So I did.

Are you familiar with the French Bouillotte lamp?  After consulting Professor Google, I've learned that the bouillotte lamp originated in France and was used on the playing table for a card game (similar to poker) known as Bouillotte.  The original design included a tray where chips were stored and a key at the top of the lamp that would allow the shade to be moved as the candles they used at the time burned down.

That's all very interesting but I bought the lamp because I loved the aged finish and painted detail.  And it casts a nice little glow in my room at night.

And so yes, room(s) not yet completely done and we're already making changes.  This happens to you too, right?

Scott's

Sunday, January 12, 2014

Monday already?  I hope you all had a great weekend.  We had some beautiful weather in  Chattanooga with temps in the high 50's and loads of sunshine.  That's my kind of winter weather!

Anyway, I wanted to share some photos with you of some fun things I saw at Scott's Antique Market in Atlanta.  Surprisingly, the only thing I bought was lunch followed closely by some powered sugar donuts. But I did see lots of things I would love to have.

Like an enormous pair of concrete foo dogs.

Or this sweet dining set of 4 lucite chairs and a round table with faux bamboo legs.

Someone pounced on this bar cart right away. We got there pretty early in the day Thursday and it was already sold.

Looking back at the photos, I realize that I should have bought this rug.  It was in good shape and the dealer really wanted it gone.  He offered it to me for $125 and it was a big one.  I'm regretting not buying it on the spot.

There were miles of rugs like these.

Tables full of beautiful high end fabrics

And mountains of beautiful Chinese porcelain.

And this is just the stuff I remembered to take pictures of.  Really there was so much more.   My head is still spinning!

How was your weekend?  Any good shopping finds?

New Year New Opportunities

Monday, January 6, 2014

Hello and happy 2014!  I  thoroughly enjoyed the holidays and my blogging break, but I'm ready to get back in the swing and get this new year underway!  I've read so many inspirational blog posts about resolutions and goals for the future and find it so energizing.

What do I have planned for 2014?  I plan to build on and grow my business this year!  I feel like I turned the corner in 2013 from having busy spurts to being consistently busy - and it feels great!  I hope that trend continues and I intend to continue working hard and building my brand.

I've also been kicking around the idea of opening an Etsy shop so I can share my vintage finds with a broader customer base.  I still have my booth here in Chattanooga but I'd like to expand on that. I will be testing the waters with a series of tag sales hosted here at my blog and on my Instagram feed, so make sure you're following along because I wouldn't want you to miss out on the fun!

And finally, some serious decorating is in the works at Project Dollhouse, the little house of never ending projects. This awesome rug I got for Christmas will be making an appearance in aforementioned project.

And so it starts!  Happy New year, and thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit and comment.  That's what keeps me going!!

xo

The Business of Design - Marketing

Thursday, September 5, 2013

Did you click through to this post because you're hoping to get tips for how to market your design business?  Sorry, but I'm writing this post because I've been given an amazing opportunity to have a booth at the upcoming 2013 Home & Remodeling Expo and I'm hoping you folks might be able to help me out.

I will have a 10x10 booth that I am planning to stage in a style that reflects my aesthetic.  The centerpiece will be this Mid Century Modern dresser by Dixie.  It needs a little love, but it's solid, has great lines, and fab hardware. Done.

This original painting by Mid Century artist Tom Hayward will probably be propped on the dresser.

Also, I'm making over these chairs as we speak - (I should be stapling right now).
They're getting the white paint treatment and this new fabric.
One of my all time faves.

Let's see.  I'm also thinking about flanking either side of the booth entrance with these recently scored etageres.

The etageres will be decked out with a mix of brass, white porcelain and maybe a few old books for a textural mix.

So you can see I have a pretty clear direction of how I want things to look.  Now I have to figure out what to have in my booth to help me from a business standpoint.

Here's what I have on my list right now.

Business cards
Guest book to collect email addresses
Portfolio album of past projects
Winning smile and positive attitude
Oh, and a sign.  I'm getting a sign made.

I feel like there should be more.  Not more stuff to fill the booth, just more about me and the services I offer.

Help a girl out. Leave me a comment below or email me with your brilliant ideas.  Tick tock, the Home and Remodeling Expo is next weekend!

Project Dollhouse Family Room Styling and Sources

Sunday, March 31, 2013

I have a few more photos I wanted to share with you of my family room makeover that was part of Linda at Calling it Home's One Room Challenge. I also got lots of emails inquiring about sources for some of the items in my room, so I've supplied links wherever I could.

I got more emails about the Lemon Tree fabric than anything else.  Sadly, I can't share a source with you for this.  The fabric was a lucky find from a small fabric store in Atlanta near my mother's house.  I bought what was left on the roll and haven't seen it or been able to find it since.  If you want to have a go at locating it yourself, the fabric is by Greeff for Schumacher.  The name on the selvage is "Lemon Tree".  The store I where I found it is Budget Upholstery.  Information about them here. (They also made the slipcovers for my Mid-Century barrel chairs years ago and have reupholstered sofas and chairs for me. If you're in the area, I highly recommend them)

Metal stoolLeopard print fabricCowhide rug/Yellow velvet fabric.  The rattan armchairs were an estate sale find.

My huntboard was styled mainly with things I already had.  The bird picture was given to me by my mother.  The chinoiserie lamp and mirror were thrifted, and the "Kimberly" brick was a happy find that was uncovered during a historic home restoration a few years back.  My husband found it in the basement and presented it to me as a gift. The bust/planter was a new purchase.  I altered the color by pouncing on small amounts of leftover gray, cream and beige paint.  When that was dry I rubbed on a thin layer of Minwax wood stain to give it some age.

The needlepoint leopard and the pottery planter were both estate sale finds - not at the same time.

All estate sale/thrift finds

Wall paint is Benjamin Moore's Moonlight White.  This room is blessed with a southern exposure that is unobstructed by trees or shade of any kind, so the light is wonderful all day long.

I have one more post planned for this room, and it addresses my heavy use of vintage and "found items".  If there's anything else you're curious about, shoot me an email!

The Good Kind of Shopping

Sunday, November 25, 2012

Hello and happy Monday!  How was your Thanksgiving?  Mine was delicious (thanks Mom!) and I'm happy to say that my now slightly larger backside did not stand in any of those awful Black Friday lines.  I will never understand the excitement some people seem to get from that tradition. That being said, I did manage to make it to a few Antique Malls and actually found some lovely things.

Like this sweet floral chair.

It has a great shape -  and that peach and gray floral fabric? It reminds me of my own peach and gray wedding ages ago.

Who doesn't love a gold faux bamboo table?
Alex Papachristidis hasn't met one he doesn't like (and I say that in the best possible way).

This pair of interracial concrete greyhounds would be wonderful flanking a fireplace (or my front doors).
I'd love to have these, with a side of Zimba.

I haven't personally jumped on this bandwagon, but these lockers look great in orange.
And could be very practical in an office.

That concludes the stuff I didn't buy portion of my little shopping excursion. I'd love to know what you bought over the weekend. And more importantly, are you out of your "yoga" pants yet?
