Two Steps Back

Sunday, June 23, 2013

When you walk through the front door of my house, there's a stairway that leads to the only room we have upstairs.  It's a big bedroom with a full bathroom attached and two nice sized closets.

It's prime real estate for teenagers!  And I have 2, so when we moved in to this house, we let the oldest daughter choose her bedroom first.  Naturally she chose the penthouse suite upstairs.

But things have changed - and quickly.  My oldest daughter moved out a month or so ago as she is just finishing up Cosmetology School and has left our little nest.

Which means the upstairs private bedroom and bathroom is up for grabs, and my 14 year-old is eager to claim this space as her own.  And that's fine, but there's a glitch.  She doesn't like anything girly - particularly the hot pink walls chosen by daughter #1.

And that means this big  room that I painted pink for the oldest daughter now has to be repainted - in white - for the youngest daughter.  And that's not the only project we have going down.

There is furniture painting involved.  Mostly inherited pieces that are getting freshened up.

And all of this means that the new flooring project I had hoped to to work in our living room, dining room and foyer is moving a little farther down the list.

BUT, there's a silver lining to this musical rooms situation.  I plan to claim the soon to be vacant bedroom on the main level for my office!!!   As soon as the upstairs bedroom gets repainted, the living room and dining room get repainted, and the new flooring gets installed.

Yeah, that shouldn't take long, right?

Mexican Blankets

Sunday, March 3, 2013

Last weekend I rode up to Knoxville with the hubs for the day to look at a truck that was for sale. When we stopped to gas up the car not too far out of town, my eye went to straight a colorful display that was right inside the store window.  Of course, I had to go check it out and it was exactly what I thought it was.  Mexican blankets, in some of the prettiest color combinations I've seen!

I folded and unfolded them about a dozen times trying to make up my mind about which one(s) I wanted - it was tough because I really wanted them all.

Ultimately I got just two - one in yellow, beige and black and the other in pink and charcoal.  The texture is fantastic and there's so many ways you can use them.

Of course, you can always use them for the purpose they are intended - as blankets.

But I've also seen - and loved- them when used as upholstery fabric

Would you love to have this chair?

This is still one of my all time favorite spaces, and I never would have expected to see a French Bergere chair upholstered in a Mexican blanket - piped in purple no less.

I already have a job in mind for my blanket.  It's going to be doing this.

Because of this.
Don't forget to check back with me Wednesday!  My girls and I will have another update for you for the One Room Challenge!

Happy Monday!

Weekend Victories

Sunday, October 14, 2012

How was your weekend?  I actually got some things done that have been on the back burner for quite a while and even squeezed in a little shopping!

First up, the thrill of victory!  I finished this antique dresser and plan to bring it over to my booth this week.
For those of you who are wondering, the paint I used is Rustoleum's Oil Based High Gloss in Royal Blue.  Right out of the can.  I'm kind of excited about how it turned out. The original finish on this piece was pretty shot, but the lines were fantastic. Once again, paint is the hero!

I also picked up a small herd of brass deer for my booth.

I have high hopes for them this holiday season.  They would be perfect for holiday tablescapes , on the mantel, or even on a coffee table.

Oh, and along the thread of the upcoming holidays, I found a set of vintage mint green ornaments.  I think I'm doing green and gold on my tree this year.  Not the 70's kind.

Speaking of the 70's kind, what do you think of these glasses? I got a set of 6 for my booth, and I think they would be perfect for styling up the bar.

And the headliner:

Teenager pried off of sofa to wash the car - for the very first time.  Some of us found it more amusing than others.

104 Ravioli

Monday, December 12, 2011

Did you have a good weekend?  I went to my parents house in Atlanta this weekend to partake in the annual making of the Christmas ravioli.  I'm half Italian on my mother's side (her folks moved to America from Sicily right after they were married!)  Every year we make homemade ravioli to enjoy for Christmas dinner and it's quite a delicious and fun event.

We start by making our own dough.  There are about 5 different versions of the dough recipe, and this year we used some semolina flour.

My brother Greg, who inherited my Mom's "great cook" gene, is mixing the dough.  Then it is left to rest, kneaded, and rolled out on the pasta machine

The pasta sheets are then topped with this filling of meat, garlic, cheeses and a few ingredients I am not at liberty to reveal.  It's a closely guarded family recipe.  In fact, when my brother broke up with a girlfriend many years ago, the first thing my mom asked was, "Does she know the ravioli recipe?"  Luckily for her, she didn't.

World's best mom working on a row of the world's best ravioli.

World's best ravioli all cut and sealed.

All ready to go to the freezer where they will wait for Christmas Day.

Now all we had to do was repeat 104 times and we've got enough ravioli to feed about a dozen ravioli-loving relatives.

Too bad we our computers don't have smell-o-vision.

What are your favorite holiday traditions?
