Powder Room Project: Option 2

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

My torment over my powder room makeover continues, and today I want to share option 2 with you.  This option is the complete opposite of what I'm considering for  option 1.  Option 2 is bright and clean, as opposed to Option 1's dark and moody feel.

Here's the inspiration.
This is a framed scrap of Brunshwig & Fils Les Touches.  My plan is to do a loose interpretation of this design for the walls using black & white paint.  The concerns here are obvious.  First, it could end up looking like a third grade art project.  Or, that many spots in a small area could give you crazy eyes.

Assuming I throw caution to the wind and move forward with the walls, here's what else I would like to do.
I saw a mirror very similar to this one at Homegoods the other day.  The Homegoods version is less ornate and the frame is solid black glass.  The Homegoods version feels more modern than the image above and has the cool factor.

Baseboards and door will be painted black.  The rest of the trim will remain white.  This will not go over well with the husband, because baseboards are "supposed to be white".  Note to self: it will be hard but helpful if I don't roll my eyes while he voices his objections.

Finally, accents of pink and gold/brass.

Option 2

What would you choose?

Eek! I can't decide...black trim looks soooo good so I'd almost opt for that. Good Luck!

I do love black trim but I'm still leaning towards #1 :)

Thanks for commenting this morning Kim! And now for my verdict on your powder room....I an ALL OVER Option 2!!! I love the framed fabric, the table from Oomph, the marble paper and the mirror!! It's going to look amazing!!

OPTION 2!!!! Love everything about it!

Definitely option 2! I will take your advice on not rolling my eyes while my husband is voicing his objections on my projects. That might help. Glad I am not the only one!

I'm all about the drama in a powder room, and luckily, either choice brings that in. I love #2, but share your concern about the painting....gotta be good! I'm kind of loving the eggplant too....I'm really no help, am I??

#2 without a doubt! I cannot WAIT to see how you interpret the Brunshwig & Fils print. And I love the idea of bucking convention and going with black trim around the baseboards and the door!!

Having a little technical difficulty - if this is a duplicate comment please feel free to delete! Tough choice here! But I think I'll have to go with version #1. I'm really liking these dark moodier rooms lately. And love the comment about rolling the eyes - must remember that as well!

I still like #1. There is something about that purple that speaks to me. By the way, I saw that clover table in Homegoods a few weeks ago for $50! I'm kicking myself for not buying it but I hope someone gave it a good home.

ps - thanks for stopping by!

I'm with the masses on this one. I like option #2. I'm not sure about the free form black spots though. Maybe you could do one wall and see how you like it?...

Kim - great choices, however my vote is for number 2! It seems more unique then the first choice and perhaps a little more classic, with a touch of edgy-ness. Can't wait to see what you do!!

Oh Option 2! So glam! I had to laugh about not rolling your eyes. I'm still training myself on that one, although my husband seems to realize I'm still going to do what I want regardless.
Can't wait to see what you pick!

Still love Option #1...though I am so intrigued by the wall treatment for #2. Can't wait to see the result of whatever you choose!

I like option 2 better...because I am really wanting to do some pink in our house...so, that is my vote! I really like that white frame with the black leopard looking print...that would be fairly easy to replicate. I know whatever you choose will be darling!

Yikes....um.....well....love things about both...maybe option 1..no I mean 2...no 1...that's it...until tomorrow and then I could change my mind :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment today. Ok, I love reading about everyone's husbands and their reactions as we all seem to have the struggles of convincing our husband to trust our judgement on design decisions.
As for the bathroom, I love the black trim. Now regarding option 1 or 2, I like them both, but 1 gets my vote. It is clean and classic and love that round mirror. Can't wait to see your room when you are done.

Hi Kim I vote for option 2. I think I would leave the walls white without the spots, I am not sure it would translate onto the walls very well. I love the sharpness of it all, but you know I love black and white and in a bathroom well that is a plus in my book. Can't wait to see what you do!! Kathysue

PS I am working on a playroom re-do, Having lots of fun!! Molding got painted today!! Yay!! KS

I can't way it loud enough- OPTION 2!!! Adore the touches, palate all of it- not sure how the treatment will work on the walls- maybe just leave them white and do huge framed panels of the fabric - you could even make the frames ornate like in your inspiration- gorge!

My Interior Life said...

You know I love the dark option, but I've always loved that La Touche fabric. Maybe you could paint the whole room black and use that framed remnant as the accent. Then put up the Homegoods mirror. Talk about drama! I'd be a little hesitant to paint the dots on the wall (might look like a Dalmatian), but I love the idea of just using the remnant. Or isn't there a wallpaper similar somewhere that I've seen? I may be hallucinating. It will look wonderful regardless!

Haha laughed out loud when read: Note to self: it will be hard but helpful if I don't roll my eyes while he voices his objections.

I do the same!!

Love the option 2! And - where is that marble artwork from?? Is it craft paper or something??

Love them both. Oh goodness, I am so much like you. Always have two plans and can't decide.
I am going to go out on a line and say #2.
Hope your week is going well, Kim.

I vote option 2, i just absolutely adore your entire plan!! Gorgeous. And just paint the trim and let your guy see what he thinks. Thats always the best option for me

I am a sucker for the light and bright! And the black trim will make the space so unique! My vote...Option #2!

claps her hands and screams Yes Yes Yes! to option 2.

I adore the black baseboard idea. It is SO hard not roll eyes at men when they are being silly, right?

Kim@Chattafabulous said...

Savvy Gab, that marbleized comes in sheets - decorative paper from Dick Blick . Gorgeous, yes?

Fabulous inspiration boards! I love both, and I have a thing for dark paint in small rooms, but I have to go with option 2 for this one! Love the fun fabric inspiration for the walls, and the pops of pink is always favorable to me!

On the husband thing: I prefer to do stuff like painting, when he is not home, then I don't have to deal with objections ;)

i LOVE option 2 with the baseboards and i adore the framed artwork. i may steal that idea!

Here's the thing: When do you get the chance to go wild and paint a room dark? It takes a lot of guts to do that in any other room in the house -- here you can totally get away with it. Why not do it?

You can find a similar Oomph table at Homegoods for about 45.
