Mother of Pearl

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

I love to see natural materials incorporated into a room's design and one of my favorite materials to play with is Mother of Pearl.  In case you aren't already a fan, Mother of Pearl is the substance that lines shells and mollusks. It has a quiet, shimmery quality that suggests glamour in a more understated way.  I went shopping for Mother of Pearl accessories and here are my favorite picks

This is a letter opener from Mother of Pearl Etsy seller "Nacreart"

And did you know that Mother of Pearl is the recommended serving platform for caviar? Apparently the chemical makeup of the Mother Pearl enhances the caviar and keeps it fresher longer.  Remember that the next time you serve caviar over at your place  :-)

And do you remember Traditional Home's spread a few months back that featured Jill Zarin's New York apartment?

Yes, those tables are covered in Mother of Pearl.  There's gotta be a DIY project here using these tiles

Before & After - My French Bergere Chair

Sunday, December 12, 2010

Have you ever noticed how time seems to fly by when you're doing something you love?  I've been putting in a lot of hours lately preparing things for the opening of my shop and rather than feeling tired, I feel energized and more inspired than ever!  Good thing - I have so many  projects waiting in the wings! This french bergere chair makeover has been languishing for months - I've had it partially torn apart and the fabric purchased since the summer.  I finally finished it up last week and wanted to share the fruits of my labor.

Here it is before - on second thought, during...

The chair itself is in great shape, I just fell out of love with the blonde wood finish and the 90's upholstery.

The chair got a light sanding, priming, painting and reupholstering with Braemore's Flowering Branch fabric.  I love this fabric and got it locally at Gifford Street Fabrics downtown.

This was my most difficult reupholstery project yet. Even though I used the existing fabric to cut the pattern for the new upholstery, it was tough to get it to fit just right.

I think the bloody thumb and the burn marks (they call it hot glue for a reason!) are worth it!  Yay me!

Linking up at Metamorphosis Monday.  Check it out!

Christmas Natural

Sunday, December 5, 2010

I can't believe we're a whole week into December and not a Christmas post from me yet!  The truth is I'm not a big seasonal or holiday decorator, even at Christmastime!  What I do love to use are simple greens, pine cones, candles and branches- then mix in a little sparkle!  Hope you enjoy these Christmas images that have a simple, nature-inspired theme.

How is your Christmas decor coming along?

Welcome to my shop!

Thursday, December 2, 2010

We've traveled a tough road to get here but renovations are finally winding down and tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. we are opening our doors!  No small feat, we are in an old building that required some updating and renovating to make it useful once again and as with any renovation, it took longer and certainly cost more than expected.  The good news is we are open in time for the Mainx24 celebration which will be happening right outside the front door!  This is truly a unique event that is held in Chattanooga's revitalized Southside.  24 hours of parades, special events and merriment!  If you're nearby, it's an event that should not be missed.

Now on to the shop. Here are a few photos I snapped earlier today.  I'm so excited and would love to hear your feedback and any suggestions.  Thanks for coming along on the ride with me!  Oh, and locals - please stop in and see us in the newly renovated Merchants on Main building, located at 607 E. Main St. in downtown Chattanooga!

Olioboard

Sunday, November 28, 2010

Have you been to Olioboard yet?  It's a site that's very similar to Polyvore, an online resource for creating inspiration boards. The advantage of Olioboard is that it's much easier for me  those who are not so technologically advanced!  Olioboard is exclusively devoted to creating interior design moodboards, and there are tons of options to choose from for furniture, accessories, lighting, rugs and even art!  It's completely free and you can click on any element on your board and get a link on where to purchase it.

My first time on Olioboard I created this board in about 20 minutes.

It's especially helpful for those who have a hard time envisioning the "finished product".

Be warned - its lots of fun and just might be addicting!

Have you discovered Olioboard yet?

Grateful for You!

Monday, November 22, 2010

This has been a busy time for me.  I'm hosting a small dinner for Thanksgiving and I've been setting up my shop space for the opening of Merchants on Main Dec. 1.    I'm not complaining, I love being busy but it's left me very little time to work on my blog or to visit all of my favorite blogs.

I hope to have some photos of my shop for you by next week - I have some great vintage pieces and can't wait to share them with you all!

I wish everyone a safe and beautiful Thanksgiving celebration!  I'm spending time with the people that mean the most to me and counting my many blessings.  I'm so thankful for everyone who takes the time to visit my blog.

Have a beautiful holiday!

Welcome Back You Awesome Brass Lamps!

Friday, November 19, 2010

Walked by many of these lately?

They're in every Thrift Store, garage sale and craigslist in the country and I've always passed them by.  Silly me!  Good thing there are  bloggers out there who are smarter than me and have embraced the brass lamp that I (once) scorned!

Here are a few that have been given a total makeover with some paint.

Pretty great, right?  I love them, too, but my favorite brass lamp makeovers are sporting their brass finishes proudly, although maybe a bit shinier.  And with new black shades.  Check these out.

The two images above are from Mr.Goodwill Hunting.  Have you been to his blog?  It's all about the stuff he gets at thrift stores and transforms into stylish decor. Go there, it's amazing!

These two images are from Christine's entryway at Bijou and Boheme.  Notice the new wallpaper in the second image?

Who knew you could take an ordinary brass lamp, put a new black shade on it and create this kind of magic!

I'm a believer now, how about you?
