Mother of Pearl

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

I love to see natural materials incorporated into a room's design and one of my favorite materials to play with is Mother of Pearl.  In case you aren't already a fan, Mother of Pearl is the substance that lines shells and mollusks. It has a quiet, shimmery quality that suggests glamour in a more understated way.  I went shopping for Mother of Pearl accessories and here are my favorite picks

This is a letter opener from Mother of Pearl Etsy seller "Nacreart"

And did you know that Mother of Pearl is the recommended serving platform for caviar? Apparently the chemical makeup of the Mother Pearl enhances the caviar and keeps it fresher longer.  Remember that the next time you serve caviar over at your place  :-)

And do you remember Traditional Home's spread a few months back that featured Jill Zarin's New York apartment?

Yes, those tables are covered in Mother of Pearl.  There's gotta be a DIY project here using these tiles

on this Ikea coffee table.

Feeling the love?

I also love mother of pearl used in jewelry but you know I never really stopped to think about what it actually was other than from the sea - interesting. Now I would love to see that Ikea table made over, I don't want to do it but I would love for you to and show us all - :)

those tiles are beautiful! I love your idea for the IKEA table--I hope you'll do it and follow up with a post about it.

I've been into making necklaces out of mother of pearl chips.

OK, that DIY project you mentioned at the end is so fab - so many apps there. Where did you find those tiles? I tried to click "Source", but could not find them! Love this. M.

That pink sideboard is the best thing I have seen all day. Imagine how pretty it would be with all of the light playing off of it.
