And sometimes the fish scale design was used on roofing shingles.
But we're talking about the here and the now, and the fish scale design seems to be gaining popularity - again.

Fish scales would be an easy fit in the bathroom
Here is a modern bathroom by Emily Henderson that features fish scale tiles on the floor.
And another bathroom that features fish scale tiles on the shower walls.

I love how the fish scale pattern was used as a border on the rug below. It adds interest while being understated.
And for those of you that want to add a little touch of fish scale without a major commitment, why not add a fish scale pillow?
or this shower curtain from Jonathan Adler.
What do you think? Do you like the fish scale pattern?

Fish scale pattern also makes me think of the Roaring 20s and Art Deco--especially on the Nippon pattern and the Jonathan Adler curtain--which is very popular now as well! Also like the pillow as a fun way to try out the trend on a smaller level.
Yes I do like repitition on most things so this is soothing.
I do like the pattern. If one could commit its a major statement that stands the test of time. The visual impact is a game changer for the room. I think my favorite is the green shower. Fish scale walls with that mosaic tile floor...

Yes, especially that flooring tile & the gorgeous wallpaper! Probably not for the exterior of my home, because like you said, perfect for victorian home.
I love it on the border of the rug!
Great round up. I'm a fan of it in small doses. Love it in bathrooms best I think.
I love it, especially with a mod spin, like the Nippon and Cole & Sons papers.
There's a cute bungalow on my street with original fish scale siding in the area between the roof line and the tops of the windows (whatever that's called). It's ADORABLE. I'm obsessed.
I like the fish scale especially if you are looking for a smaller scale pattern to go with larger ones!
I like that detail, especially on the pillow. Pam at Simple Details made a lampshade that has the fishtail effect.
I do, and I love the history behind it! Have a great weekend. xo Nancy
