Guest Posting at Meet Me in Philadelphia

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Today I'm guest posting for one of my favorite bloggers, Ashley from Meet Me in Philadelphia!  In case you haven't heard, Ashley and her husband Adam are on a dream vacation to Scandinavia, a place I have only visited via HGTV's House Hunters International (sadly).  Happily, I'm sure Ashley will take lots of great photos to share with us when she returns.

I'm posting about what September means to me, so head on over and see my September favorites here.

Easy Update with Target Cylinder Lamp Shade

Monday, August 27, 2012

It's no secret that I can't refuse a great vintage lamp.  Here's one of my latest lamp purchases.  I don't think it's old or particularly valuable, but I loved the squatty jar shape and the riot of colors in the Chinoiserie design.
I was not loving the lavender shade that came with it.  The proportion wasn't quite right and the whole shade was looking a little tired.

I found the perfect solution on the clearance aisle at Target.  These black cylinder shades were marked down to just $7.

It's makes that little old lamp look important, doesn't it?

Project Dollhouse Master Bathroom Wallpaper - Final Rose

Monday, August 20, 2012

I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on the wallpaper for my master bathroom, but I wanted to run the selections by you before I place the order.  I've looked at lots of options, and have finally narrowed it down to two!

Do you remember when I posted about Rose Cumming's Zebrine wallpaper?  It's amazing yet not even close to being in my budget.  Luckily, I happened upon a much more affordable option that looks pretty good.

I also received a sample of this paper months ago from Design Your Walls and I love it, too. It's much more vibrant in person, and definitely more teal than blue.

Some other things you should know:  Although it's the master bathroom, the house was built in 1972, and its pretty tiny as far as master bathrooms go; so even though both papers are bold, they'll be confined to a small area.  Also, we kept the original cultured marble counter tops that look similar to this, only mine have a little gold glitter embedded in the design.

We have also installed this tile from Home Depot on the floor.  It's mostly gray with some veining action.
Also,  the original bathroom cabinets have been given a coat of white paint, and I'll be adding brass ring pulls.  Are you still with me?

Option 1 is the zebra bathroom.
I know, the mirrors! They're from Bassett.  Art is from Etsy artist Tastesorangey.  Fabric is Malakos Malachite from Dwell Studio, and I would use it for the shower curtain.

Option 2 is the teal ikat wallpaper bathroom:

Art is from Kerry Steele, mirrors are from Lowes, and the shower curtain is from Target.

So, I'm 99% sure of which option I'll choose.   Care to guess?  Or tell me which option you prefer.

Old School - Betty Sherrill's New York Apartment

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

I came across an article in the New York Social Diary that featured decorator Betty Sherrill's (of New York City's McMillen, Inc. Design firm) apartment.  The look is super traditional with lots of French and English antiques, original paintings, soft colors and traditional floral prints.  This style is what made me fall in love with interior design and decorating a few decades ago.  My taste has changed a little since then, but I still love traditional style and layers of pretty things.
The living room has buttery walls and is more cluttered than we typically see today.  But it's pretty clutter.

Don't you love the trim on that tablecloth?

This little area off the living room is a bar, and it looks like lattice on the walls.

This is the library.  It's so cozy with the warm color on the walls and the mix of pattern.

Here's a tighter shot of the library shelves packed with family photos and personal momentos.

This room is more restrained than the rest of the house. What do you think of the leopard chairs on the leopard rug?

This is a shot of the bathroom's family gallery - casually placed right on the tile.

If you get a chance, head over to the New York Social Diary and read the article.  Ms. Sherrill is a lady with an opinion and she's happy to share it!

Hope you're having a great week!

Raise Your Hand ...

Sunday, August 12, 2012

...if you think I should put an awning on my house.  Most of the exterior work is done at Project Dollhouse and I'm pretty happy with the progress we've made.  Unfortunately, I've never been one to be satisfied with just "pretty happy."  I think an awning over the front door could be just what my little house needs to give it some depth and interest.  Here is the least attractive angle of the front entry. I think the Dollhouse is embarrassed by this unflattering, driver's license-esque photo. I took it at dusk with my phone.

I like the awnings below for my house because the curved shape mirrors the arches over my big windows.

Pretty, right? And I like the white piping.   What do you think about stripes (not necessarily those colors).

I love the combination below,  but do you think the curtains would be too much?

Maybe not!  After all, look how well it worked for the Novagratz'.

And finally, feast your eyes on this awnings/curtains situation.  So cute! And quite similar to the Dollhouse - they could be cousins.

Lots of options here - which one do you like best for the Dollhouse?

Keeper

Thursday, August 2, 2012

This little number is coming home with me tomorrow.

I've had a revolving door devoted entirely to cocktail tables for my family room and this one is a keeper! The style is a no-brainer, and, finally, the size is just right!

Pictures to come when it's in place.

Also, thank you for all of the kind comments and emails about my Master bedroom makeover!  It was a fun project and it's exciting to complete(ish) a space!
