Wood Floors in the Bathroom

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

My house was built in 1904 and when we restored it 6 years ago, we kept as much of the original architecture as we could. This included all of the heart pine flooring.  Since we were on a tight budget, we decided to keep the room's original footprint and work with the wood floors that were already in place.

Sorry these photos are not styled (which will be even more obvious after you view the images below). We have since added the glass doors to the built-in cabinet over the tub.

Yes, I was a little worried about having wood floors in my bathroom because of all of the moisture and splashing concerns, but I have to say the floors have held up beautifully and I haven't had a single problem with them. They're also a little warmer and softer on your feet than tile or marble.

More images for those of you who are not convinced...

Oh, I am convinced and I love your bathroom! I love the warmth wooden floors bring to the space! I tried convincing my husband, but he's very practical and was worried about water spillage, etc. In our next house, I will fight for wooden floors!

I love wood floors in bathrooms too...and actually also kitchens-- but my husband worries about the whole water issue! We may end up going with tile-- but you made a great case for wood flooring! Take care, Caroline

Beautiful bathroom. In my opinion wood floors work in any room, I love them! Heart pine floors are especially lovely, they are so full of character.

You have a beautiful bathroom! Thanks so much for letting us know you love wood floors in the bathroom! I'm so glad they have held up, because that's exactly what I want to do in ours!

I love the idea and I think you're probably right, warmer underfoot. I love the look. Marble is so slippery so I'm not a fan of that.

I have no problem with wood floors in the bathroom. I think they look beautiful!

I love the photo of you in that awesome mirror. This is so stunning! I know about saving money by keeping the footprint (especially the location of the toilet). Great job.

Wait? Who was that in the mirror? I am more worried about wood in bathrooms. What do you think?

I have always loved the look but always worried about the practicality. Hearing your approval makes me want them even more someday!

I've seen some spaces that do a little tile rug around the tub and wood elsewhere. That probably helps the splashing issue.

Your bathroom is gorgeous! We've had wood floors in a bathroom before and loved it. We had no problems with them.

I think wood in the bath sounds great. I actually want to put engineered hardwood in my boys bath - they can be a little crazy with the water! I really dislike grout so I'd like to do away with it wherever I possibly can. You have such a nice bath!

We have would flooring in our kitchen and its already ruined I could imagine how bad our bathroom would be. I think we are just a bit more careless. Good thing we went with tile in our new one! Yours look pretty. Then again im sure your family is not as destructive as we are!

I love wood floors, too, Kim. I would love to have them in my kitchen or bathroom. Water is probably a main concern to a lot of people, but unless you're a real slob with water getting all over your floors, I would think it holds up fine. Next house! : )
