One Room Challenge Week Five - Kitchen Progress

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

I can hardly believe I'm typing this but we're now in WEEK 5 (aka "Panic Week" ) of  Linda's One Room Challenge.  If this is your first visit here, welcome!  As part of this series ( which culminates in the BIG REVEAL next Wednesday)  I've been making over the kitchen at my house.  If you would like to see the progression thus far, click here.

So about this week. Not a huge leap forward, but a few little details have been addressed. I think "shopping" is the theme of this post.

Like I changed out my cabinet hardware. When we first moved in I used some pink glass knobs and pulls left over from another project. I replaced them with these lucite knobs and very simple drawer pulls I found at Home Depot.

And that early 90's tile floor that makes me cringe is a little less visible under my new seagrass rug from the O.  Please note that if you want a natural fiber rug in the kitchen, seagrass is the way to go.  Seagrass is grown in salt marshes and is naturally water/stain resistant. Why they take all that water resistance and then band it with plain cotton is beyond me.

A cute and easy storage solution was found at my local HomeGoods.  The big basket is large enough to hold a 20-lb bag of dog food and the smaller stripe basket holds 4 big soft drink bottles and an assortment of canned drinks too.

I have been styling and restyling my shelves ad nauseum.  "Effortless" looking styling is exhausting.

Finally, I tried out this little x- bench but I don't think it's staying.  All those legs going every which-way is just too much.  I think if by some miracle I can find a bench with cabriole legs similar to the table legs then I would be good with that.  Or I may just end up getting another Panton chair.  What do you think?

I'm still waiting for window coverings to be finished, art/framing to be completed and picked up, and over the table lighting installed.  And more shelf styling.  This could be a nail-biter of a week.

Wonder how these folks made out.

"Effortless" styling is exhausting--so true. I love that you've decided to hide the less-than-pretty stuff of the kitchen (dog food and soda cans) in pretty baskets. Great idea!

Had to laugh when I read your comment about the cotton trim on the seagrass. How true! Love the knobs & hope you find the stool you're seeking.

Great tip about seagrass rugs in the kitchen. I had no idea. Love the styling that you have done, and I can't wait to see the light.

I always love the texture and color of seagrass with white. I like the idea of a bench at your table, good luck finding the perfect fit, sending karma your way! :)

I am with you on the fact that effortless style is exhausting, it takes time and patience, but i have no doubt the result in your kitchen will be amazing. My 2 cents on the chair is another of the same, clean and simple!

Love the sneak peak of the countertops with your cabinets Kim!!!!! Things are really looking great! Agree with the X bench, not for that area. Another pantone would be ok I think, but might cover up the table? I'm at a loss as to what kind of chair to put there too. But I'm sure you'll come up with something that works and will be fabulous!

P.S. I've used those HD knobs before!

I love your comment on how exhausting "effortless style" is!! Exactly how I feel!! Your room is coming along beautifully, Kim. Love the big baskets for storage!

Hmmm, I like the idea of a bench so that the space remains open. Craigslist to the rescue?

I normally love an x seat table or console too but with the Payton curve, the tiles, I think the x just doesn't flow either. Another Panton wouldn't hurt :)

The baskets are really fab. I love the way this is going.

I love the pop of lucite! I recently bought that exact same bench with hopes of recovering it but it didn't work for the room. I know you'll get it all figured out!

It's all looking wonderful. I agree that the x bench doesn't really work. Can't wait for your reveal.

love that the dog food is convenient, but hidden in an awesome basket. didn't know the stain and water resistance of seagrass, even better! Can't wait to see it next week!

I ordered my sisters seagrass on Overstock also! It's the best. What is going to go with the legs of the table and the chairs....that is a tough one. Something with out legs maybe but whatever that is I am not sure! Crikey....you have some searching to do. Love the baskets too.

I love the idea of a seagrass rug in the kitchen. I have been contemplating something different in mine. HG has great storage options and tons of baskets. I would add another Panton chair. Their shape and silhouette are so striking that anything else in that spot might be lost, I think.

Baskets & seagrass are looking fab! Checkout Overstock for a metal basket stool; it is a groovy look & will pair up with the vibe you are creating. Have fun!

Looking good! Glad to know about seagrass, since I've had bad experiences with other natural rugs in the past. Loving the dog-food-hiding idea, too!

Did NOT know that about seagrass -- thank you!! Looking really good, girl. And I hear you on the tile, I have it too...

Amen to your comment about Seagrass!! My carpet guy here locally binds it with a thin natural binding that looks like seagrass. I HATE those thick cotton bindings!! By the way your room looks great!!
