One Room Challenge Week 4 - My Kitchen Wallpaper is Up!!

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

So here we are at Week 4 of the One Room Challenge, the one where I and 19 other bloggers/designers are making over a room from start to finish in 6 weeks sharing our progress along the way every Wednesday.  All of this fun is courtesy of my hero Linda from Calling It Home .  She's smart like that. Anyway, if you're just joining the series, you can get caught up on Weeks 1 - 3 here.

You may recall that I left you last week with a little tease that arrived in a cardboard box all wrapped in shiny plastic.

Curious about which pattern I chose? Take a look!

 Ha ha.  Just kidding.

Here's the pattern I chose.

Scalamandre's Tabore from here.

I put my own spin on it and had my wallpaper ladies install the paper horizontally. I don't know if it made much difference but it made me feel pretty clever. Here's how it looks on my walls. The color in real life is somewhere between the drabish olive seen above and the what you see below.  It's vibrant without being garish.  And I love it.  Truly.  It's transformed my kitchen!

But wait!  That's not all.  I also got my shelves up!  Those came from Lowe's. Right off the shelf.  They had the perfect size (17.7") to fit the tile where we removed the upper cabinet.  Happy!

Hey, outlet just hanging out there in the middle of the wall between the tile and the window. Why are you there?

So, let's all calm down for a moment and consider the other issues that need to be addressed to make this kitchen worthy of the Dollhouse.

Two issues in this photo.  1.  Lighting.  The overhead lighting does not adequately light the dining area at mealtime. That little lamp sitting on the table is a band-aid.  Obviously I need something better and cuter.  2.  That's a big blank wall that needs some interest.  I've got to figure out what to put there.  Feel free to jump in with your ideas on that.

So that's all I have for this week.  I'm feeling overwhelmed and under prepared because I need to have decisions made and in place to show you a finished kitchen 2 weeks from today.

Dang.

Don't forget to check in with the other participants and offer up your encouragement and kind words. It really does help!

I did get nervous for a second thinking there was a new trend for that wallpaper that I didn't know about. ;) Love how the pattern is there, but subtle just enough to add a huge impact in the room. And I can't believe how perfectly the shelves fit in that space. That's the kind of stuff that makes me want to do a happy dance when it works out. Look forward to see what you come up w/for above the table. Good luck in the home stretch!

Very pretty green! The Lowe's shelves look great - I love the idea of open shelving in a kitchen.

I love the wallpaper. Did they have any problems hanging it horizontally? It looks wonderful.

Good lord. you had me going for a minute there. :) I should have known better. Are you able to hang anything above the table for lighting? I think the wallpaper looks smashing up against that bright white subway tile. And I love your shelves!

I was a little skeered for a minute... PHEW. Looks great!

As for lighting, could you swag a petite chandelier over the table?

I love that paper hung horizontally! Happy you found what you needed it at Lowes, love it when that happens.

Loving the second wallpaper...the first not so much. :-)
Maybe sconces on both sides of the artwork you spoke about yesterday would help shed some light on dinner??
Good luck in the homestretch! - kate

Oh wow, I nearly had a heart attack. What a fun paper... I really want to see it in person!

Thanks for your kind words, Kim. I'm not sure my daughter would agree with you. That was hilarious about the wallpaper and then brilliant to hang it sideways. I do see the movement is different than vertical. Can you do a sconce on the wall for lighting? Maybe not after wallpapering. I think art is one of the hardest things, good luck.

LOVE the wallpaper, and it is totally different horizontal than it would have been vertical. Feels like clouds instead of trees, if that make sense.

You are so funny and you are clever to hang the paper horizontally! Re your table/lighting, have you considered a large piece of art coupled with a picture light that will highlight the painting/picture but also provide some lighting?

Lowe's?! Really, they look great - As does the paper. Great progress so far!

My brain is a little off and for a split second I thought you were serious about the first wallpaper:) The real one looks fabulous and I know I am going to love your finished project.....

Loving the paper!! You should totally do some sconces and art above the table to maximize your surface area. Brass would look hot on that green.

Fantastic!! I am partial to chartreuse so I just love it! Also adore the way you hung the paper horizontally -- so clever, but I bet your paper hanger was cursing a blue streak… btw That wall is crying out for a bold graphic print…but i know you will find just the right thing!
