A funny thing happened on the way home from the airport

Thursday, January 5, 2012

Hi kids! It sure feels great to be back at the blog! How was your holiday?  Incredibly, my youngest is still out of school.  Someone at the Board of Education had the brilliant idea to tack a winter break on at the end of the Christmas break, so they don't start school until Monday.  Just how many trips to the mall am I expected to endure?

On Wednesday morning I dropped the husband off at the airport for a business trip and then took the dangerous ride back home.  Dangerous because on the ride home I pass by Harbor Freight Tools, Hancock Fabrics, Tuesday Morning, the Wallpaper Warehouse store and two good thrift stores.

My first stop was Harbor Freight, where I got a few packs of these sanding sponges.  Are you familiar?  I love them because they're pliable and you can easily sand chair legs and oddly shaped surfaces.  And you can rinse and reuse them when they fill up with debris.
You can get a pack of these for $5.99 at Harbor Freight Tools.  Everywhere else I've seen them they were priced at over $2.00 per sponge.

My next stop was Hancock Fabrics.  After taking a quick tour of the fabric displays, I headed back to the remnant table, where everything is $5 per yard.  You may have to dig a little, but you can find some pretty good stuff here.

There were about 3 yards of this black and gray ikat.

and less than a yard of the same pattern in green.

Some pretty floral fabric

I'm pretty sure this is the Dwell Studio/Robert Allen pattern whose name escapes me right now. They had 3 yards of this in one piece .

And the find of the day!  Some remnant pieces of Riad from Windsor Smith Home.

I got 3 pieces totaling about 2 1/2 yards for $5.00 per yard.

And finally, I made a quick stop at my favorite thrift store and got this pretty painting.

Not bad for a drive home from the airport!

I'm so happy to have you back here!  I have tons of projects coming up, new arrivals to share from the shop, and progress reports from Project Dollhouse.

Squeeee!  It's going to be a great year!!!

Kim, that IS a dangerous route home!! What a score on the fabric and the painting!!!

I try so hard to go through the remnant table at my local fabric store, but it's so daunting. But after seeing what you found I think I can take it on again!

Nice finds! I recently got 6 yards of riad in a different colorway for 5.99 a yard and I'm so excited to use it up. I'm going to have to check my store remnants more often though. Amazing deals for you.

Kim, that's so funny about Hancock. We don't have one in Nashville/Franklin anymore, but when I visited Memphis over the holiday I hit the one 10 minutes from my parents' house twice. I hit that remnant table hard. While I found a couple of goodies, nothing like your Windsor Smith score - that's amazing - good for you! Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you. I need to pick your brain on an orange, coral and red color scheme I have going on in my brain for the new master bedroom. Now I need a nuetral color for the walls.
