Is this crazy?

Monday, May 10, 2010

I have had the same brass bed for about twenty years now. I bought it as a young adult (I think this was my first furniture purchase ever) and it is a good, quality piece made of solid brass (not brass plated).  Don't get me wrong! This bed has served me well and I certainly don't regret buying it, but...

...there just comes a time in girl's life where she needs to change things up! ... sooo - since my latest passion/obsession is anything that falls into the chinoiserie/Oriental category, I'm thinking that maybe I could fashion a super-cool headboard out of a Chinoiserie screen?

Have you seen this or know anyone who has done it?  In my mind I love it! Here are some images of headboards that are pretty close in concept to what I have in mind
This is actually a screen mounted on the wall over an actual headboard.  Pretty close..

This is pretty close too, my heart wants something more scenic and more lacquer-y. Photo from Southern Living

This is a room divider/floor screen. I'm thinking this would somehow have to be mounted to the wall

Another room divider/floor screen.  It is about 6' tall, which is good because I live in an old house with 11' ceilings. There is also a version of this in a 36" height. The two screens immediately above from here.

This is not quite as literal, but could work really well.  This is almost free and you can find it at Home Decorators.  I love the lightness and branchiness (feel free to borrow that word).

I realize this may be a little bit over the top, and it would definitely be the star of the room where everything else would need to be understated (particularly the bedding)..
...so what do you think.  Is this crazy?

And if it is ... is it crazy good  or just plain crazy????

Reminder - my giveaway is this Friday!  Learn about it here!!

Hey Kim, thanks for stopping by. I always appreciate your comments. I have hung similar screens for headboards, and they look great. Another idea would be to purchase a roll of Japanese inspired wall paper with a metallic backgound...there are many, and cover a piece of masonite and insert it into a wooden frame. You could also do that with fabic and upholster the headboard for a similar look. I know it will be great, whatever you do.
You made me start thinking....dangerous!!!

ummmm...excuse me...YES! do that!Do you remember my post on antique wallpaper roller lamps not long ago? I used an image of a pair of screens hung on a wall in that post. I think that idea is awesome...but you know me, I love chinoiserie...

good luck!

I think it sounds like a great idea. I saw a beautiful screen at the thrift store last week. I think it was old, beautiful colors only $75. I decided to think on it and when I went back of course it was gone.

Go for it! I like Sally's idea to use wallpaper.

I knew my super smart and stylish friends would have some great ideas! Sally, I know the chinoiserie upholstered headboard would be great because my main concern in using a screen is the comfort factor.

Donna, I am going back to your post to study the blog post you referred to.

Julie, I can't tell you how many times I have gone home to mull over a purchase only to return and it's gone! You think I would learn. My most recent is the thrift store well-constructed but worn french sofa for $29. And I had to think about that!?!?!????

Yes, do it for sure. We hung a panel from a white fretwork screen sideways above my daghter's bed for her headboard. It looks great. I think you'll be happy with whatever you come up with and I can't wait to see it!

Crazy good!! It is not for comfort but it is for a verrrry good look. Don't get rid of that brass bed , keep it for another day or another room. That is a classic style and it is gorgeous. Trust me on this, brass is back and you will regret if you get rid of it. Go for the change and put the brass away for awhile, Kathysue

Kim ~ I love the idea of bringing in the chinoiserie. Another idea I thought of would be to find chinoiserie fabric and make a slipcover for your existing brass headboard. Then, if/when you tired of it, wa-la, you could whisk off the slipcover and there would be your old friend Brassy! You could even have it "bare" in the summer and warmed up with the slip in the winter. Just a thought! I LOVE the last screen from HD. I am slowly re-doing my master bedroom and introducing leaves and birds into the scheme. This would make such a great focal point. I'm running over there right NOW to check it out. Thanks for the inspiration and be sure to show us what you do! xx P&H

Go for it....a little hard to sit up and read in bed...but if that doesn't bug ya, have at it. I saw a similar screen in a local thrift for like 50 clams...you'll find something that calls your name!

Hey Kim! This reminds me of a job we did for a customer in the beautiful Loveman's on Market building in downtown Chattanooga. We created an upholstered, hinged screen to act as a headboard. It was VERY tall and made a "WOW" statement in the room. In this case the customer was all about natural textures and used a heavy, nubbily linen in a natural color. We debated on whether to add amazing decorative nails, but we didn't. In your case, you could cover the screen with a Asian fabric to get the look you want!

Your bed is fabulous I agree! And I get the need for change, great post!

Hi Kim! To agree with a couple of earlier comments, framing wallpaper and hanging that behind the bed instead of mounting a screen may be a good idea. The wallpaper panels will be more flush to the wall, allowing you to prop loads of pillows against them and keeing the comfort factor.

Good luck!
