Rooms without Pattern

Monday, May 20, 2013

Pattern is something I love to work with and is a great place to begin the design of a room.

I bet you would never guess that I'm also drawn to rooms that have little or no pattern.  This room by Gerrie Bremmerman is an all time favorite room of mine.

I realize there is subtle pattern in the weave of the rug and the detail on the console tables and mirrors, but for the most part, it's a combination of solids - and allows you to focus on the shape of each piece of furniture.

I think Myra Hoefer does patternless rooms better than anyone.  I read an article once that said the key to using only solid fabrics is to vary the sheen.  She mentioned that she loves to combine velvets and silks.  All in solid colors - and one of the colors she loves to use is yellow.

This bedroom by Suzanne Kasler is done in blush feels so restful and calm.  Can you imagine how different it would feel if it were layered with pattern?

Where do you stand on using pattern. Love it or leave it?  Or does it depend on how, what and where?

I looked around and discovered that I have very little pattern. I added some with my drapery panels, and they do make a statement. But other than those, my open concept rooms/spaces have no other patterns and are in black, white, gray with golds, metals, and mirrors....lots of mirrors
I found your examples very eyeopening!

I love it. A room without it is really flat I feel. It works like texture does, a visual texture of sorts. Have a great week Kim!

Pattern all day! I love pretty neutral rooms but I always end up using pattern.

I like pattern but tend use mostly solids in my home. Each room usually has only one pattern in it but I am trying to add layers of pattern to my casual family room to keep it fun.

Kim, you surprised me on this one. I would not have put you in those pattern-less rooms. I love how quiet they feel. I think at least a splash of pattern is a good thing.

I do we'll with patternless homes. I like to try new things, like bold color and patterns but I always go back to neutral. Could it be the crazyness of the day? It's calming to come to? Great photos!

Love them both ~ Suzanne Kassler can do no wrong in my book! I have all solid neutrals, and always add pattern with pillows, but solids with a variety of textures...oooh!

I love pattern too! Some of my favorite parts of my home involve pattern.. fabrics, wallpaper etc. Love that zigzag bedding from West Elm!

Oh how I love pattern. I am probably guilty of too much pattern in my home. Love it!

I tend to love pattern especially in pillows, a very special chair, It breaks up they eye and also takes away much of the formality (unless that is what you want)

Come with me on my adventure in France.
life, possibilities, grace
a beautiful dream...

I'm with you, Kim. I love pattern and have it everywhere in my home. But sometimes I find that I crave the quiet of neutral solids. But honestly I think I'd get bored with them. Grass is always greener, I guess. :)

I gravitate to patterns but love when a room has no pattern. Actually my bedroom doesn't now that I think about it...

I like both ways. The patternless examples you've shown are lovely. I've seen rooms I like where the only pattern was on the rug and I sometimes like that if it's done well.

I like pattern but I tire of it. I have learned I need to use it in ways that are easy to change out. On the other hand, those patternless rooms are so peaceful, aren't they?

I always want some movement in the room....and pattern helps with that!
