Project Dollhouse Family Room Styling and Sources

Sunday, March 31, 2013

I have a few more photos I wanted to share with you of my family room makeover that was part of Linda at Calling it Home's One Room Challenge. I also got lots of emails inquiring about sources for some of the items in my room, so I've supplied links wherever I could.

I got more emails about the Lemon Tree fabric than anything else.  Sadly, I can't share a source with you for this.  The fabric was a lucky find from a small fabric store in Atlanta near my mother's house.  I bought what was left on the roll and haven't seen it or been able to find it since.  If you want to have a go at locating it yourself, the fabric is by Greeff for Schumacher.  The name on the selvage is "Lemon Tree".  The store I where I found it is Budget Upholstery.  Information about them here. (They also made the slipcovers for my Mid-Century barrel chairs years ago and have reupholstered sofas and chairs for me. If you're in the area, I highly recommend them)

Metal stoolLeopard print fabricCowhide rug/Yellow velvet fabric.  The rattan armchairs were an estate sale find.

My huntboard was styled mainly with things I already had.  The bird picture was given to me by my mother.  The chinoiserie lamp and mirror were thrifted, and the "Kimberly" brick was a happy find that was uncovered during a historic home restoration a few years back.  My husband found it in the basement and presented it to me as a gift. The bust/planter was a new purchase.  I altered the color by pouncing on small amounts of leftover gray, cream and beige paint.  When that was dry I rubbed on a thin layer of Minwax wood stain to give it some age.

The needlepoint leopard and the pottery planter were both estate sale finds - not at the same time.

All estate sale/thrift finds

Wall paint is Benjamin Moore's Moonlight White.  This room is blessed with a southern exposure that is unobstructed by trees or shade of any kind, so the light is wonderful all day long.

I have one more post planned for this room, and it addresses my heavy use of vintage and "found items".  If there's anything else you're curious about, shoot me an email!

Chartreuse - Friend or Foe?

Sunday, March 24, 2013

Happy Monday, everyone!  Hope you had a great weekend.  My youngest is on Spring Break -or as I like to call it, the beginning of the Zyrtec days.  Here in the southeastern United States the pollen counts are astronomical each spring as a yellowy-green haze covers everything in sight, only to be washed away by some welcome rainfall. In fact, cars look like this from the end of March until late May.

It's gross. Seriously.  Chartreuse is probably the most hated color around here every spring, so I thought it would be only be fair to show chartreuse in a more flattering light.

Never would have thought about using chartreuse with gray, but it looks great here.

Chartreuse and white always looks fresh.

And what about black?  It's my favorite companion for chartreuse. Unless your black car is sporting this combination.

I can't leave you with this image.  One more for good chartreuse.

Happy Spring Break!

Friday Shopping - What? Kirklands?

Friday, March 22, 2013

Before I check out for the weekend I want to thank everybody for the generous and kind comments about my Family Room Reveal for the One Room Challenge.  You guys made my day!

I don't know about you, but I'm ready to kick my feet up for a few days!  Before I catch up on some couch time, I wanted to share a source for an affordable Louis-Phillipe mirror.

While shopping for a client master bathroom renovation, I came across these pretty mirrors at a  fantastic price.  Now I haven't seen them in person, but from my computer screen they look pretty damn good!

And the price is good too.  Just $139.

See them here.

Have a great weekend!

One Room Challenge Week 7 Hip! Hip! Hooray! It's Reveal Day!

Thursday, March 21, 2013

Okay, not too many words.  Today is all about pictures!  I'm excited to share my finished space with you and also to see what the other ladies have cooked up.

Real quick, in case you're visiting for the first time and you don't know what's going on here, Linda from the "Calling it Home" blog has assembled a group of 20 designers/design bloggers to participate in a One Room Challenge, where all participants transform a room in 6 weeks time, sharing their progress along the way.  Got it?  Good. You came on a good day.

Here is the space I started with.
It has the shape and charm of an empty shoe box.  There is no architectural interest to be found in this space.  The most noteworthy feature is the circa 1972 sliding glass door.  The theme of this makeover is "decorating".

The moodboard:
This is where I was headed.  I think I stayed pretty true to the original plan, which was inspired by my fabulous "Lemon Tree" fabric.

Here come a lot of pictures.  And you guys have suffered through countless crappy phone pictures so I thought you deserved something better today.

This is the view looking into my family room from the front door/foyer.  The hunt board was one of the first pieces of furniture I bought when I got married over 20 years ago, and so I've held onto it for sentimental reasons.  It's also the piece that refused to cooperate with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint!

You may recall that I decided to divide my long and narrow space into two separate areas.  This is the impromptu library area that is directly behind the sofa.

This shot gives you a better perspective on how the space is laid out.

Now this shot is from the opposite end of the room, and this is the tv viewing area - and it gets a lot of tv viewing action.

I think this is my favorite shot of the entire space.  Those Mid-Century barrel chairs(I have 2 - you'll see the other one farther down the page)  belonged to my parents and I remember them being in the very first living room I have memories of. About 10 years ago I took Mom up on her offer to pass them on to me.  I had them slipcovered in  off-white denim and they've been with me in every home since.  They are the perfect scale for this long and narrow room!

Here is it's mate.  And my Kerry Steele painting is right above it!

This is looking back into the space from the kitchen.

TV Wall with thrifted lamps.  They were all yellow when I bought them a few years ago and I hand-painted the raised detail in white.  Made all the difference.

I think that's all the pictures you can handle right now.  There are lots of blogs to visit today!

A ginormous thank you to the extraordinary Linda from Calling It Home.  I appreciate the invitation she extended to me and I have to say this entire process has been the MOST fun thing I've done since I started blogging!  The other participants have been incredibly helpful, and I appreciate everyone's friendship and support.

I also have to thank talented local photographer Jaimie Smialek for making my room look so good!  You can find Jaimie's website here.

I have more pictures that highlight some of the styling that I'll be sharing over the next  few weeks too.  Stop by if you can!

Hurry on over and see the other reveals today! I'm right behind ya.

Regarding Pinterest

Monday, March 18, 2013

So about Pinterest.  I was later than a lot of you to open an account, and even later to actually create my boards and start pinning.  Between blogging, facebook, work, family and everything else, I just didn't want to commit to another social networking platform.  I'm so glad I had a change of heart, because, good Lord,  I'm in awe over the number of fantastic images, ideas and recipes I'll never make to be pinned every day!

Do you have the Pinterest app? It's the end of boredom as we know it. Carpool lines, waiting rooms, and sporting events will never be the same.

I'm fascinated by what the people I'm following are pinning, and I'm astounded by the number of incredible design images that are floating around out there.  A wealth of inspiration for the taking!

And just a few weeks ago, someone I admire/idolize became a follower.

Meg Braff. Color me tickled.

Are any of your idols your followers?

Make sure you stop by Wednesday.  I'll be revealing my family room makeover for the One Room Challenge!

My Favorite Color and a Pinterest Board that Celebrates It!

Friday, March 15, 2013

Happy Friday!  With St. Patty's day coming around this weekend, I thought it would be fun to pay homage to my favorite color - green!

A few weeks ago I got an email from Katrina Cromby Brown, an Aussie who apparently shares my love of green.  Katrina kindly invited me to view a Pinterest board she created named "My Obsession with Green".  It's an impressive collection of beautiful imagery - all centered around our favorite color.

Here's a sample portion:

ORC Week 6 - New Sofa, Chair and Lamp Makeovers

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Where has the time gone?  I can't believe I set out on this mission 6 weeks ago!

The One Room Challenge was conceived by the very talented and capable Linda at My Crafty Home Life.  Basically, she assembled a group of 20 bloggers to redecorate a room from start to finish in 6 weeks. Time has really flown by and I can't believe the reveal is next week.  If you'd like to get caught up on everything One Room Challenge that has transpired since the beginning, click here.

Now, how about a little progress report? I've been busy trying to finish up all of the little projects I've been putting off.   Isn't it funny how when you think you're just about finished, the real work begins?

Anyway, I did manage to make over a pair of Chinese Chippendale armchairs to go next to my library table.

I interviewed many candidates for the job.  Here are the mockups

Anyway, I'm happy with the paint color/fabric combo. I love the yellow velvet next to the Lemon Tree fabric!

What else can I share with you?  I also did a mini-makeover on a thrift store lamp.  Nothing cutting edge, just your basic sand, paint, and add trim to a new shade.  Here's the before.  I loved the shape of this lamp but the finish was in bad shape.

And finally, I got my new sofa in place.

Happy!!! Next Wednesday is the big reveal.  You've got to come back and see it all finished up!

Make sure you visit the other participants and see what kind of magic they've created this week.

ORC Week Five - Art Wall

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

This is week five, isn't it?   If you're visiting me for the first time, you can catch up on previous One Room Challenge posts here.

First, I have to apologize for getting my post up a little late.  At around 9:30 last night I was moved to start assembling my art wall, so I had to wait until the sun came up this morning to take some photos of it.  I'm not going to be giving a tutorial on how I did it because there aren't many directions to follow.  If you recall, I have an empty room directly behind this wall and it was the right size to create the arrangement I wanted to put up on the wall.

I did measure the overall length and width of the arrangement to make sure it would all fit on the wall, and then I just started hanging.  I referred to the pictures I took of this arrangement and eyeballed it  to make sure I was still on track.  That's kind of the beauty of this type of installation, it's a more collected and added to look, so measuring was optional.

I started with the picture that would cover the big hole in my wall, since covering it up  was crucial.

And now, an Instagram Tour.

In the light of day, it needs some tweaking, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.  And it's always hard to the true impact of a project like this with less than stellar photography, but I will say the room feels completely different now.

And speaking of art, I found got a frame yesterday for this little number I got in the mail from my super talented cyber buddy and artiste extraordinaire Kerry Steele.

It's waaaay more gorgeous than this iphone picture can capture.  It's not on my gallery wall, because it's getting placed somewhere special all by itself- but you can't see that yet!

Make sure you visit the other fab participants and see how they're coming along.
