Top 5 Items for Styling (that you already have)

Sunday, January 26, 2014

And so yet another week of way way way below normal temps are expected around here for the majority of this week.  And that means lots of time spent indoors. And that means lots of opportunity to really study your decor and maybe start to think you want to change things up a bit.  This happens to you, I'm sure!  And maybe you don't want to go out and buy a bunch of new stuff to get a new look at home.  Not to worry!  Here are my top 5 items that you already own that you can use to freshen up your place.

1. Bottles.  I love to decorate with bottles.  See photo of my kitchen below.

Would you believe there are 4 bottles in just this photo?  Limoncello bottle on bottom shelf, small blue bottle on middle shelf, blue wine bottle on windowsill, and wine bottle behind fruit on countertop. More bottles have been added since this photo too.

Wine bottles also make good vases

and candleholders

2.  Books.  We all have them.  They're great for adding texture and for propping things upon.

In my kitchen I used a small collection of cookbooks to style my kitchen counter (and more bottles if you look to the far left in this photo).

In the photo above, I used books to add some height and texture to my bust planter.

And I used a collection of books to style my skirted table.

3.  Candlesticks.  I like a mismatched set placed in front of a mirror for maximum impact.

4.  Bowls.  Of something.  It helps if its a cute bowl and you put something cool in it.

Like a bowl of photographs or a big bowl of sea shells.

5.  Mirrors.  I love them and I'm always looking for ways to work in another mirror.  Layering is the answer.  Behold.

Fish Scales

Sunday, January 19, 2014

Today we're talking fish scales.  This pattern, like many patterns that most consider "modern", has been around for centuries.  The most recognizable application that comes to mind is the fish scale shingles seen on the exteriors of houses of the Victorian era. Fish scale shingles were used mainly in the gables of these homes.

And sometimes the fish scale design was used on roofing shingles.

But we're talking about  the here and the now, and the fish scale design seems to be gaining popularity - again.

Fish scales would be an easy fit in the bathroom

Here is a modern bathroom by Emily Henderson that features fish scale tiles on the floor.

And another bathroom that features fish scale tiles on the shower walls.

I love how the fish scale pattern was used as a border on the rug below.  It adds interest while being understated.

And for those of you that want to add a little touch of fish scale without a major commitment, why not add a fish scale pillow?

or this shower curtain from Jonathan Adler.
What do you think?  Do you like the fish scale pattern?

Scott's

Sunday, January 12, 2014

Monday already?  I hope you all had a great weekend.  We had some beautiful weather in  Chattanooga with temps in the high 50's and loads of sunshine.  That's my kind of winter weather!

Anyway, I wanted to share some photos with you of some fun things I saw at Scott's Antique Market in Atlanta.  Surprisingly, the only thing I bought was lunch followed closely by some powered sugar donuts. But I did see lots of things I would love to have.

Like an enormous pair of concrete foo dogs.

Or this sweet dining set of 4 lucite chairs and a round table with faux bamboo legs.

Someone pounced on this bar cart right away. We got there pretty early in the day Thursday and it was already sold.

Looking back at the photos, I realize that I should have bought this rug.  It was in good shape and the dealer really wanted it gone.  He offered it to me for $125 and it was a big one.  I'm regretting not buying it on the spot.

There were miles of rugs like these.

Tables full of beautiful high end fabrics

And mountains of beautiful Chinese porcelain.

And this is just the stuff I remembered to take pictures of.  Really there was so much more.   My head is still spinning!

How was your weekend?  Any good shopping finds?

Ebay Fabric Obsessions

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

Is anyone else sick of all the playoff/bowl games that have been on TV over the past few weeks? I honestly don't mind watching the occasional football game with teams that I actually know and care about, but to watch game after game (after game) is not my idea of a good time.  So whilst the husband was alternately cheering and cursing at the TV, I made good use of my time by doing a little cyber fabric stalking, ebay style.  Have you tumbled down this rabbit hole yet? If you haven't,  you're missing out on some good stuff.

Like Brunschwig &Fils "Kyoto"  Completely lovely, super affordable, and there's enough to make a few pillows.

Or "Chinese Peony" from JP& G Baker, priced at just under $30 per yard. It's a polished cotton chintz in a gorgeous mint green.

Are you on the blue & white bandwagon? Here's a fabulous print you won't see all over town.

I love this one.  Don't judge.

Or what about Cowtan & Tout's Bloomsbury. Ultra-feminine and old school, but everything in moderation right?

Trust me, this is only the beginning.  And while we're on the subject of shopping, guess who's going to Scott's Antique Market??  Super excited!!!  I haven't been to Scott's in about 4 years so I'm really looking forward to the entire experience.  It's always so fun!  Look for lots of pictures on my Instagram feed.

Happy shopping everyone!

New Year New Opportunities

Monday, January 6, 2014

Hello and happy 2014!  I  thoroughly enjoyed the holidays and my blogging break, but I'm ready to get back in the swing and get this new year underway!  I've read so many inspirational blog posts about resolutions and goals for the future and find it so energizing.

What do I have planned for 2014?  I plan to build on and grow my business this year!  I feel like I turned the corner in 2013 from having busy spurts to being consistently busy - and it feels great!  I hope that trend continues and I intend to continue working hard and building my brand.

I've also been kicking around the idea of opening an Etsy shop so I can share my vintage finds with a broader customer base.  I still have my booth here in Chattanooga but I'd like to expand on that. I will be testing the waters with a series of tag sales hosted here at my blog and on my Instagram feed, so make sure you're following along because I wouldn't want you to miss out on the fun!

And finally, some serious decorating is in the works at Project Dollhouse, the little house of never ending projects. This awesome rug I got for Christmas will be making an appearance in aforementioned project.

And so it starts!  Happy New year, and thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit and comment.  That's what keeps me going!!

xo

Low Cost and Easy Thanksgiving Table Ideas

Even though Thanksgiving is late this year, it seems to me like it came pretty quickly. I'm not hosting our family dinner, but I plan to go to my parents house a few days early to help with preparations and to set the table for our Thanksgiving celebration.  And I'll let you in on a little secret.  I'm not a big holiday decorator. I usually put a few holiday touches in each room, but I don't go to too much trouble.  It has to be easy and it has to be practically free.

Extra points if you can name any of the plant material in the arrangement below. Those big green things that looks like brains are the fruit of an Osage Orange tree.  We used to have one in our back yard and every year it dropped tons of these big green fruits. They provide great color and texture.  The small red berries look like Nandina berries, and we have one of those growing wild in the woods behind my house. Throw them in a big white bowl with pine cones sprinkled on top for a colorful, natural centerpiece.

There is beauty in simplicity.  Behold.

All you would have to do to create the tablescape below is take a walk around your property with some scissors.. And please take note of the simple glass jar as vase.

I love this idea.  Upside down wine glasses become a fun group of candle holders.  So smart.

It's a Southern thing, ya'all.  Magnolia leaves as chargers.

1. Partially fill a simple glass vessel with water. 2.  Put some fruit in it.  3.  Add a floating candle on top.  4.  Put it on a tray with found sprigs.  Done.  I really have done this one before and it looks great!

And finally, winter fruit in blue and white containers. That's what I'm talking about.

This is just the beginning. I'm sure you smartypants have some cheap and easy Thanksgiving table ideas.  Share it with me in the comments!
