I firmly believe that it's the details that take a space from "pretty good" to extraordinary, so I tend to scrutinize rooms that I admire and make mental notes of all of the details. One of the details on my radar right now is the use of pleated lampshades.
Pleated lampshades were big in the 80's and 90's, but fell out of favor for the more streamlined drum shade. Apparently someone smarter than me thought that if brass could make a big comeback, why not bring back pleated lampshades too.
I think this is just part of a larger movement to more classic interiors, where the pretty details are layered on.

Great timing. I'm looking at recovering two shades right now, and after this post I'm reconsidering my direction. You may have just provided me with the answer I've been looking for!
ReplyDeleteThank you!

Everything seems to come back around one time or another...just a tad different...were seeing trims and now pleats! If south-west design comes back from the 80s...that will be hard to get on board with!
ReplyDeleteLove the look of a pleated shade, they bring a sense of tradition to the room and help with layering - However they are dust magnets...
ReplyDeleteThanks for ALWAYS keeping us updated!!! Lisa
Before this post, I definitely would have said pleated lampshade are OUT! But now...I'm reconsidering. These all look pretty fab and add some great texture.
ReplyDeleteIt is time to replace two lamp shades and I know that one will be pleated! I have never completely replaced them!

So funny that you mention it! I just purchased a large brass Frederick Cooper lamp on Etsy and picked it up this weekend. The shade it came with is pleated linen. I thought I'd replace it, but I really like it! And the best part is that the lamp with shade was 150.00. YAY!!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I am in love with these images. I need to get some more lampshades and pleated have always been my favorite with the exception of one lamp.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing, Kim.

I'd definitely consider one in, say, a bohemian fabric from Peter Dunham or Kathryn Ireland. In a solid color, the shades would look really dull and dated, right?
ReplyDeleteWhat makes these work so beautifully is the pattern in the shade ... i think that makes it fresh and fun! Although I wouldn't turn my nose up to a solid either!! xo
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of a pleated shade!! Take care, Caroline
ReplyDeleteAnything Nick Olsen does is aces in my book.
ReplyDeleteI would have said no before seeing these, but they're looking cool...again!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'm quite ready, but thanks for helping me get used to the idea!

Everything old is new again, right? I like the bohemian printed ones but not so much the plain ones. I just worry about dust!
ReplyDeleteI agree it all comes back around. Not sure I can do pleated yet but we'll see.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have some gorgeous ones from Lux. I think the key is larger pleats instead of the teeny 80's ones!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm, no. I was down with the comeback of brass, but I don't think I can embrace a pleated shade. Can't we leave some things in the past?
ReplyDeleteI am so traditional......I love pleated lampshades and I love how peter dunham uses them. Also, I remember that charlotte moss' office in Lonny had one too....placed on top of a column lamp. I think her lampshade was a custom les indiennes fabric. So pretty!!
ReplyDeleteI'm all confused now. I love the pictures you showed.
