So You Want to Plant a Bradford Pear

Don't do it.  Bradford Pear trees were trucked in to nearly every clear-cut new subdivision about 15 years ago because everyone loved their white early spring blossoms.  Big mistake.  It turns out mature Bradford Pear trees split easily because of the stress and weight of their heavy branches.  




Luckily, The Dollhouse has been spared. 

Seriously, go for the Dogwood.

    I am sure the people that own the homeI owned 15 years ago are happy, because I planted two. That was before I realized the blooms smell horrible, and now I learn this. WHOA!

    I've been told if the tree is pruned right, they don't split. However, the trimmer that told me this didn't elaborate so I could pass this valuable information to others! And they do stink! I opened my car windows one Spring morning while passing a grove of them, inhaled deep... Only to smell ... Fungus? Phew!

    Oh no, I'm sure that was a scary surprise! We have one in our yard too and have been meaning to take it down for forever. I guess I should move that up the list!

    OMG! I am so sorry. So glad the dollhouse was spared! Coincidentally, our house that was built 15 years ago (not kidding) had a big ole smelly Bradford pear in front of it until we finally got around to having it cut down a couple of weeks ago (for the very reason you illustrated). Now, we can actually see the front of our house and don't have the threat of a broken tree. Crazy!!

    Oh Ive had this problem numerous times! They say there's a stronger more resistant Bradford pear variety out there, but I haven't seen it. Im tired of cleaning up the mess after a storm. We cut it off at the base one year, and it is back big as life now. I should keep trimming it to just one trunk!

    Agreed. I lost one for the very same reason a bit back. Avoid. Builders love to put them in as they grow quickly, but simply do not last.
