Mirrors in the Kitchen

I love a great mirror and have a pretty diverse collection of them in my house.  Mirrors bring light, sparkle and a whole new dimension to a room.  And I love that mirrors are neutral -  a favorite mirror will probably work no matter how many times you change your decor.

I have used mirrors in the hallway, over the buffet in my dining room, over various mantels, behind the sofa and in my staircase.  I have future plans to create a gallery wall of mirrors in my dining room, which I think might be pretty cool.

But why not put a mirror in the kitchen?

Okay, this option may not work for me - I'm a messy cook.

The designer of this tiny kitchen used mirrors on the backsplash to reflect light and help expand the space.

I like the antique finish on this mirror backsplash.  It's a little softer and probably more forgiving of  inevitable spatters.

Antiqued mirror insets on rustic cabinet doors.  I like it.

Who knew?

  5. I love this idea! I was actually thinking of putting a mirror above my sink after seeing the 1st photo on Milk and Honey Home. I need something to put there but I am not sure I want to stare at myself doing dishes. Haha. Maybe antique mirror world work?

  6. I am a total mirror junky. I have them in my kitchen. I put them on the back inside of my cupboards with glass doors and I have one in the corner of my cupboards on a plate rack. Love the reflection of light. Mirrors are like windows to me!! Kathysue

  7. I love to use mirrors too. I like the idea of having a mirror in the kitchen, especially in an area where you would otherwise have your back to company.

  8. I am pretty obsessed with mirrors too, and I'm sure your mirror gallery wall will be fab! I've always thought I had at least one mirror in every room, but after reading this post I realized I don't have one in my kitchen. Eyeopener!! I might just add one now!

  10. It's actually good feng shui to put a mirror in the kitchen so that the cook can see what's behind her! Those over the stove are classic examples of feng shui "cures". It's fun to study!

  11. it's a good idea to brighten up a kitchen and create a larger area. hmm, maybe i should add this to the bag of backsplashes. probably not, i'd have to use way too much windex the way i cook!

  12. Hi Kim, thanks for stopping by my blog today! i'm sorry you are overwhelmed with the move...wish I was nearby, I'd come by and help! I love to 'move' even if it is just to clear out for remodeling and then put back in because it is the perfect time to purge and hone in on just what is necessary or what you love. Love your post on mirrors. I like how the House Beautiful mirror really makes that kitchen look larger and appear that there is a window or 'something' more than if it had just been 'tiled' but then again, I'd be cleaning it everyday!

  16. I'm a narcissist so of course a mirror in front of the stove is necessary, must look at myself while I cook.

  17. I've been trying to convince my sister to do the mirror over the stove ever since I saw it in House Beautiful. I think it's the perfect way to stay in the conversation with the people behind you while you're cooking.

  18. Mirrors are so versatile. We are considering a mirror in our kitchen above the fireplace. It's a large kitchen but the mirror makes it feel even more expansive!

  20. When we built our last home, I tried to incorporate mirrors. The builder thought I was nuts! I totally lost my nerve and edge and caved b/c nobody saw my vision and I got scared. I LOVE them in the kitchen and I love this post :) So yes, to green eggs and ham...and yes to kitchen mirrors!

    XOXO

  23. I like the idea of mirrors in the kitchen but, in my case, they definitely couldn't be in close proximity to the stove! :-)

  24. Several years ago, when I was a decorator liaison for the Junior League Show House in Nashville (when they were still doing them) the kitchen designers put in an antiqued mirrored backsplash in one portion of the kitchen (it was more of butler's pantry in a very old home). It was stunning. It obviously stuck with me!
