How do you like your trim?

A few days ago I read this post over at Cote de Texas about updating your decor and Joni recommended painting your trim the same color as your walls for a more current look.  Hmmmmm....   I have always gone the classic route and painted my trim color some shade of white, because that's just what you're supposed to do!  It's classic, expected and so very safe - and I've always like the contrast of crisp white trim against a great  wall color.

But I must admit, there is something very appealing (and maybe scary)  about painting walls and trim the same color.  It creates an uninterrupted canvas for your furnishings, fabric and art - and all the cool kids are doing it!

I'm not sure I have the courage to stroke a fully loaded brush of glossy blue paint over my white trim (my blood pressure just went up10 points thinking about it) but I have to admit, it looks great!

  1. I usually think of trim as contrasting but I have to admit that in the photo's where it is all one color it does work. Also not sure that I could do it.

  2. I like them both. Really like the Palmer Weiss room. I don't have any trim in my current home but in our last house we did it two different colors.

  3. Oohh, makes me nervous too! I love the look of a bright white trim but these other rooms could make me change my mind.

  4. I like it both ways! I also love when the contrast is opposite with light walls and dark trim. I think there are so many optiions and they all have their place.

  5. I love it both ways but in my home I would tend to stick to the white trim since one room can easily flow into the next without having to worry about trim :)

  6. This is iffy, since I have dark blue almost black walls I like how the white trims stands out, I couldn't do it but those rooms sure pulled it off just right!

  7. hmm...I love them both! I don't know if I can do blue or brown trim in 'my' home!

  8. I'm a white trim girl, for sure! Love it, so crisp and clean, I don't care if it's traditional! I would love to work with you on the blog, Kim, you just let me know! XX!

  9. Love the Palmer Weiss room. For blue rooms? Not so sure.

I also love look black trim in certain rooms. Very crisp and tailored!

  10. I'm with Danielle, I love trim to be white.

  11. The look is great with those darker colors. I haven't taken the plunge myself yet.

  12. What's the point of having trim then?...... I think if you want a modern look, ok. But for a classic look you want to see the details in trim. Just my unprofessional opinion.

  13. you have read my mind. Painting the trim the same as the wall color AND painting my doors black - has totally ruled my head since I read Joni's post.

But I am so scared. If I paint the trim in one room where do I stop???

  14. I'm normally a big fan of high gloss white on the trim, but after seeing all of the images I'm loving seeing it that way.

    I would totally do it!

  15. I've always loved classic white trim. My house has it. But I do have to say that I like how it extends the wall and makes the ceiling look higher when it's painted the same as the walls. I don't know that I could bring myself to do it however. But...my wall color is a dark cream and the trim...white so it's not that much contrast any way...but I would consider when I repaint.

  16. I did in in our last house we built and I loved it! I did a khaki room with khaki trim. Very nice, got lots of compliments :) Then I did black as well. That was scary, but again, really worked well!

Our currant home is much more traditional and I've left all the white trim alone. It's fine and I'm not itching to fix what's not broken :) I do have enough random colors in this house to keep people occupied without touching the trim!

  18. I'm still not converted. I'm paying attention, though. I'm waiting to see what colors you are painting your house.
    Best,

  19. i'm like you--i used to love a crisp white trim, but i've really been feeling trim that's painted to blend with the walls. still debating whether i'll do it, but the look is definitely 2 thumbs up!

  20. I agree with Joni! It is so current and fresh looking. The uninterrupted canvas is so much softer, and better for pops of art and accessories.

  21. A dark color primary color would be scary, but a gray or brown or neutral color might be a baby step. I painted one bedroom all gray about 4 years ago. Trim door and everything. I still like it.

  22. It's unique and I like it - it's a bold statement. Great post. Just found your blog and I'm your newest follower!

  23. I like it both ways, and I can tell you right now my husband would die if I painted the trim the color of the wall. He would hate it. I would prefer to keep our battles about furniture for now:)

  24. Perfect timing for me with this post. I have been trying to decide if I want to paint my bedroom and bath walls and trim the same color. I think I'm going to go for it. What is the worst that can happen? I can not like it and then have to go back and paint the trim. I've been known to do much sillier things! I'll let you know how the experiment turns out.

  25. Trims in the rooms of our house are usually of different color from the wall but in our bedroom we used a lighter shade of our wall color and it looks great too.

Those are lovely images by the way.

  26. I'm all over the map with this...literally, as I can see the appeal in both ways...some rooms in my home have the traditional white trim, where others we have opted for one color throughout!

  27. got to have the contrast--unless your trim is really ugly!

  28. A bold decision indeed, but adds a contemporary twist to something that is so classical. Love the classic modern Palmer Weiss space, it is right up my ally. Great collection of photos - thanks for sharing!

  29. the painted trim does look good in these rooms, but i could never bring myself to do it, it gives me a bit of anxiety thinking about it.

  30. I actually did a post on this look. I am a contrast trim gal. When I saw the Restoration Hardware store and everything, wall, trim and ceiling all the same color and finish, it was depresssing and cave like, did not like it. If the trim is the same as the walls I at least like a finish difference. Here is the post I did on this very subject if you are interested:
